Construction workers renovating the old Dalton Building on 5th Street uncovered a sealed sub-basement this week that does not appear on any city records. The area, approximately twenty by thirty feet, contained old crates and rusted shelving.
Officials with the Planning Department have temporarily halted work pending inspection. “There’s nothing illegal here,” said site manager Frank Kemp, “but it’s strange—like someone wanted it hidden.”
The discovery has reignited online speculation about the rumored network of tunnels beneath downtown. City engineers insist there’s no connection.
