The City Planning Department has approved a structural survey of the old service tunnels beneath downtown Junction City. The tunnels, originally constructed in the early 1900s for steam and telephone lines, have long been closed to the public.
Councilman Heller requested the review after recent reports of vibrations felt by nearby business owners. “It’s probably just shifting ground,” Heller stated, though he admitted the tunnels “remain an under-documented part of our infrastructure.”
Contractors are expected to begin work next week. According to one engineer, parts of the network “extend farther than anyone realized.”
